Gold sovereign / bullion
South African Krugerrand (1 oz)
The Krugerrand was the world's first modern gold bullion coin, introduced in 1967 to channel South African gold into the international investment market. Its copper-alloy "rand-gold" finish gives it a distinctive reddish hue and substantially better wear resistance than .9999 fine alternatives

Typical premium
~3–5% above spot, often the lowest premium among 1-oz sovereign coins
Above spot for new-condition examples. Older or graded specimens carry numismatic premium beyond this baseline.
IRA eligibility
IRA-eligible since 2018 when the IRS clarified that bullion-grade Krugerrands meet IRC §408(m)(3)'s purity requirements via the gold-content test (1 oz pure gold) rather than gross-weight purity. Earlier Krugerrand-in-IRA arrangements predating that clarification may have been on uncertain ground; modern self-directed IRAs accept Krugerrands without issue
