AusterlitzOn December 2nd, 1805, Napoleon I triumphed over the Russian and Austrian armies led by Alexander I, Tsar of Russia, and Francis I Emperor of Austria and the Holy Roman Empire. In a manoeuvre of remarkable precision, Emperor Napoleon I defeated the numerically superior forces in less than 9 hours, inflicting a decisive defeat on the Third Coalition. 185 cannons salvaged from the battlefield were used to build the Vendome Column in Paris, as well as for production of coin presses for the Napoleonic regime's coins. This victory sealed the greatness of the Napoleonic Empire and remains, two centuries later, the symbol of the military genius of the First Empire.Monnaie de ParisFounded in 1864, not only is Monnaie de Paris France's longest standing institution, but it is also the oldest enterprise in the world. Today, the mint strikes circulation coins for France, as well as beautiful gold and silver commemorative coin programs that are each intricately designed works of art. The mint is also home to a museum that hosts exhibitions, tours and workshops as well as the Guy Savoy Restaurant.
