Saint-Gaudens' design remained on the denomination from 1907 to 1933. Saint-Gaudens' initial plan was not to put his own name on the coin, but instead use an adaptation of Lady Liberty's inscription "Liberty" on it; however, Saint-Gaudens did later add his signature to the coin. The obverse depicts a left-facing image of Liberty wearing a crown inscribed with the word "Liberty," and holding an olive branch and a torch in her hands as she walks down a path towards the rising sun, with rays of sunlight behind her. Saint-Gaudens' two most notable features on the face of the coin is Liberty's incorporation of multiple points to give an unprecedented amount of light and shade, as well as the seemingly perfect rendition of Lady Liberty's hair
